KYPHOSIS & ROUNDED SHOULDERS
The 15 cm narrow center gives your shoulders room to move back around the arc while the upper back is supported in extension — creating space for a more open chest and an upper-back stretch.
VARAPER / THORACIC OPENER
A targeted upper-back stretch designed to open the chest, improve thoracic mobility and give rounded shoulders room to move back.

POSITIONING / FORM / SUPPORT
The 15 cm narrow center gives your shoulders room to move back around the arc while the upper back is supported in extension — creating space for a more open chest and an upper-back stretch.
Thoracic extension creates space across the chest while your shoulders move back around the narrow center, giving you a comfortable chest-opening stretch with room to settle into relaxed breathing.
Neck pain, neck stiffness and neck tension can accompany upper-back stiffness and long hours spent forward. VaraPer focuses the stretch on the upper back while leaving the neck area free, with adjustable support for the head.
Unlike a generic lumbar back stretcher, VaraPer focuses on the upper/thoracic back. Shoulder guides, the narrow center and adjustable head support help create repeatable positioning.
05 / RESEARCH & DESIGN
Published research on thoracic movement, shoulder positioning and head support informs the design rationale.
These references inform the design rationale. They do not evaluate VaraPer Thoracic Opener or establish its clinical effectiveness.
Research on a cervical support pillow in people without symptoms examined how support affects sternocleidomastoid muscle activity while lying on the back. This offers context for the design rationale, rather than evidence of Thoracic Opener’s effects. Read the cervical support study.
A cadaveric study found that specific scapular retraction and horizontal shoulder-opening positions lengthened the pectoralis minor. These findings inform the movement principle; they do not establish the effect of this product. Read the pectoralis minor study.
A clinical review describes a related stretching position using a rolled towel between the shoulder blades, allowing the shoulders and scapulae to move backward to stretch the anterior chest and shoulder region. Read the clinical review.
In a small randomized trial involving people with forward head posture, upper-thoracic mobilization combined with mobility exercises improved several short-term measures of posture and cervical function. The study supports considering the upper back and neck together, but did not test VaraPer Thoracic Opener or passive stretching with this device. Read the thoracic mobility trial.
Research on thoracic shape and mobility examines posture, thoracic kyphosis and range of motion. The references below provide anatomical context for thoracic opening; they do not show that this product treats kyphotic posture or upper-back discomfort.
These studies examine thoracic anatomy and movement. They do not evaluate VaraPer Thoracic Opener itself.
06 / YOUR QUESTIONS
03 / FIND YOUR POSITION

Place the VaraPer Thoracic Opener flat on the floor.
Slowly lie back onto the device.
Position your shoulders within the shoulder guides and rest your head on the head support.
Let your chest open naturally over the thoracic support.
A thoracic opener is a support for a thoracic spine stretch: the upper and middle back rest over a contour during thoracic extension and chest opening. The VaraPer Thoracic Opener combines shoulder guides, a narrow center and adjustable head support for an everyday upper back mobility routine.
Two thin sliding head-support modules store within the main body and deploy from the front/neck side. One extended module provides one support level; both modules can be extended and stacked for another level. The headrest section including the shoulder-guide area is 16 cm long.
The main thoracic body is 34 cm long, with an overall product width of 15 cm and a maximum/apex height of 10 cm. The headrest section including the shoulder-guide area is 16 cm long. The overall product length is 50 cm: 34 cm main thoracic body + 16 cm headrest/shoulder-guide section.
Kyphosis refers to the forward curve of the thoracic spine; excessive curvature can have postural or structural causes. Rounded shoulders describe shoulder position and are not the same thing. VaraPer gives the shoulders room to move back during a stretch, but does not claim to correct kyphotic posture or treat kyphosis. Read the NHS explanation of kyphosis.
If you are looking for upper back pain relief or general back pain relief, it is important to understand the cause of your symptoms. VaraPer is designed for upper-back stretching, stiffness and mobility routines; it has not been established as a treatment for pain, chronic pain or a tight chest. Persistent, severe, unexplained or injury-related symptoms warrant professional assessment.

An upper back stretcher supports the thoracic region during a back stretch. VaraPer uses a contoured EPP body, shoulder guides and adjustable head support to position the upper back while leaving room for the shoulders to move back and the chest to open.
The backward-bending movement of the upper and middle spine. It is one part of thoracic spine mobility, alongside rotation and other movements.
After prolonged sitting, a short, comfortable upper-back stretching routine can be part of a movement break. VaraPer supports a thoracic spine stretch with the shoulders positioned at the guides and the head supported. See our guide to chest opening after desk work; avoid forcing a stretch or stretching through pain.
A lumbar back stretcher focuses on the lower back. The VaraPer Thoracic Opener focuses on the upper/thoracic back, using shoulder guides and a narrow central arc for chest opening and thoracic mobility. Follow the intended positioning rather than treating upper- and lower-back supports as interchangeable.
The Thoracic Opener is designed for everyday upper-back mobility, including after desk work. If sitting leaves you feeling stiff or rounded forward, explore the four-step use guide for a comfortable supported stretch. Individual suitability varies; it is not a substitute for assessment of ongoing upper back pain.
There is no single duration for every person or product. VaraPer has not published a recommended usage duration, so this page does not prescribe a timed routine. Ask VaraPer for current product guidance.
Chest opening describes a stretch that gives the shoulders room to move back while the front of the chest lengthens. A chest opener supports that position; it does not establish better breathing or improved lung function. VaraPer supports thoracic extension and a comfortable chest-opening position, without claiming to treat respiratory disease.
The shoulder guides indicate repeatable placement relative to the upper back. The narrow center leaves physical room for the shoulders and arms to relax back around the arc during chest opening.
The adjustable support lets the head rest while the neck area remains free and the upper/thoracic back is supported. VaraPer does not target the cervical spine or claim to treat neck pain, neck stiffness or neck tension. Seek professional advice if symptoms persist or you are unsure whether a stretch is suitable.
The narrow center gives your shoulders room to move back around the arc during an upper back stretch. This is a positioning feature for mobility, not a promise to fix poor posture or permanently change rounded shoulders. Read about upper-back stiffness and posture and rounded shoulders.
